Social initiatives for community growth.
Women empowerment through capacity building.
Socially responsible youths are the ones who create their opportunities and contribute to a better world. They learn and enhance their skills to develop sustainable initiatives and help their community members become productive. This is how Ghada and Haneen decided to launch their project and help other young girls and women.
Lebanese rural areas have a higher unemployment rate due to the lack of development initiatives and sustainable solutions to ensure economic and social growth.
These marginalized communities present as well gender inequality especially with opportunities that are offered mainly to boys.
This November, and as part of the Generation of Innovation Leaders program by UNICEF, DOT Lebanon delivered a Digital and Media Literacy training in Tyre, in the South area of Lebanon. This training aimed to enable participants’ digital abilities to manage internet cloud, social media channels, and data and offered DOT Lebanon’s trainers the chance to meet Ghada and Haneen.
Two Lebanese women, who decided to change their way of living. Ghada, who lost her eyesight at a young age was unable to access suitable job opportunities, whilst Haneen can’t commit to a job. After getting divorced, she didn’t want to leave her kids alone. Willing to become independent and productive women, they’ve decided to launch “Golden Scissors” a common project offering sewing services.
This project will also allow young girls and women to learn sewing skills, which will help them generate income and be self-sufficient. Ghada and Haneen have planned to rent a space and machines to teach girls and increase their activities by taking more requests.
Thanks to the knowledge acquired during the training with DOT Lebanon, the two ladies enhanced their digital skills and launched social media channels to promote their project, and showed an exceptional dedication to improve their capacities and make a positive impact within their community.
This story is part of the Generation of Innovation Leaders (GIL) Program by UNICEF implemented by DOT Lebanon with the funding of the German and Deutsch embassies in Lebanon.
